We run an exchange server with raid of 5 drives, dual processor.

old winnt server

openbsd firewall tower (linux)

mitel linux tower

2 external harddrives

2 hp procurve 48 port rackmount switches

Right now we got like 4 UPS's, with the loads evened out between all of them. Mainly APC.

Im curious, how would you guys handle the UPS setup, would you get one BIG expensive one and power it all on that?
If not what kind of UPS do you recommend, ive seen the 'online' versions, not sure if they are worth it or not.

We definately do not want them to go out because of a power flash or surge...any advice please?

Here's the scenario I've used each place I've worked:

Set up 2 UPSs and one ATC (Automatic transfer switch).
The ATS gets its power from both UPSs (the ATS is a dual corded device). Each UPS has enough capacity to drive all the equipment.

Each UPS is on a different circuit.

All dual corded servers/devices are plugged into both UPSs.

All single corded devices are plugged into the ATS.

If a UPS or a circuit fails everything still gets power.
