Upon XP upgrade, excel files converted to *.wks

Upon upgrade from Win 98 to XP Pro, many excel files were converted to Works (*.wks) files...cannot open in Excel, Word, etc.

Are you sure they got changed to WKS files? Maybe the file association just got changed to point to MS-Works.

There's nothing in the XP upgrade that would change Excel documents to another format.

Open Excel and see if it will open the files.

you can also right-click on the file and choose "open with" and select excel. when you do this it should change them back to .xls files.
