Hi,

I am going to break up my movie into small parts of 500K each. I want it to download fast with 56K modems. 250K would be better....but my question is, will 500K be pretty fast?

I don't have access to server space yet so I can't test this out. i would really like to.

If anyone has experience with this, please let me know. Thanks.

while testing your 500k movie you can goto debug and set to 56k..then goto view>show streaming..and you'll see how long it takes..flash does it for ya..no guessing..

but then you got that whole processor thing to worry about but thats another story all in itself..

One another thing to hold into account when testing this estimated download time, is the fact that even with a 56k dial-up connection (I know, that's what I have!), never have I been connected at a transfer rate of more than 48kbps. And even then, that transfer rate would only be accurate at connection time, and can easily fall to lower than 30kbps during that same connection period.
So IMHO, testing this at 28kbps would reflect a better average download time for any given number of 56k dial-up users.

The good news, is that if does go faster than estimated, nobody will complain!

Hello,

I know about the debug...show streaming options etc.

but, my question is, is the "preload" number, which is given in seconds, the time it takes for the movie to initially appear in the browser.

The time it takes for the movie, for the first few frames, to actually appear before the viewer?

Do you have preloaders on your movies? That will get something on the screen somewhat fast! And then the movie will start playing only when it has completely downloaded or when you actually tell it to start playing.

As for web space... There's a lot of free hosts out there! Get yourself some space, so you can test this out on your own.

hi,

what do you mean exactly by "do you have preloaders in your movie?"

I hit control - enter, and then the movie is in test mode.

On the left, the number for "preload" appears. Is this number telling me the amount of time it takes for my movie to load?

I just want to know where i can find this number. i want a definite amount of time, with a 56k modem, that it will take for my movie to appear in the viewer's browser window.

Please let me know if it is possible to get this number or if i'm wasting my time. thanks

by the way...i definitely don't want to preload my movie. i want to have it streamed to the viewer...this way, they will start seeing something sooner. i'm trying to find out the amount of time, in seconds, the intitial pause is before they see frame 1.

Like Oldnewbie has mentioned already... 56k modem means nothing... that is only what itis capable of... most of the time connection speeds average little more than 24.

There are other factors involved such as processors which can bog down regardless of the connection or transfer rate.

The best thing to do is to create a separate scene called a preloader which gives the user an estimated time/percentage remaining on his/her individual connection... if you need help with that then maybe that is a separate thread or just do a search and read one of the hundreds already asked and answered. Don't want to use a preloader, fine, don't!

But tell you what... If you happen to be using a 3MB sound on the first frame of your movie, or for that matter any complicated movie clip, bitmaps, gradients & tweenings, you're going to wait quite a while till you get something on the screen... A preloader is designed to quickly put something on the screen, and under certain circumstances, can play the movie (in a streaming manner!) as soon as enough of the movie has loaded, so that it can play while downloading the rest it in the background.

But, you're so smart! Do it your way!

No, not really!
But what about my Christmas present? X-)
I feel NSDG will soon have a few questions about that!
Woudn't want to deceive him now, would we! Or would we?
