Upload pre existing data onto the website

Hi all, I have an urgent problem that need to be solved asap.



The situation is, I have series of files in my computer from many years ago.

I have recently asked a person to build a website for me and he built it using asp 3.5

However, he does not know how the website can show my pre existing data in the search result without manually uplaoding each individually.

Is there a method to tell the website to look for files in certain directory and display them as search result?

these statements are incredibly vague and do not provide enough information to provide an answer. what do you mean by data? a database, csv file, txt, excel, doc, pdf? what type of search does your website preform? where are the results coming from? is there any way (even manually) that the data can be uploaded to the new website to use the current search functionality? If so then start there. It's better than nothing.

The collection of data I have are in the form of doc, pdf, excel, ppt, jpeg. So when someone uploads a files onto the website, it stores it in the root directory in the computer. When someone performs a search, they are able to download the file directly from my computer. However, I cannot seem to produce my pre existing collection of data into the search result and I was told that I need to manually upload each onto the website. This is not an option for me because I have lot of data!

I hope you don't mean storing files on the root of the server, or the root of the virtual directory. saving files to the root directory requires elevated privileges which increases the risk of a security breach. saving files to the application's root virtual directly will cause IIS to restart the application anytime someone uploads a file the website.

I'm still confused about what exactly you are searching and what the search results look like. this could be my own shortsightedness though as I'm used to a website connecting to a database. not much in the way of searching documents. that said I see 2 choices.

1. in some form or another connect to the server and upload the files. whether this is through FTP, a web administrator portal, or remote server connection depends on what features the ISP provides. Once connected you can copy the files over so the search functionality can detect the files.

2. update the website to modify how the search mechanism works to search the alternate location in addition to the current location. Or point the search location to the previous/old/alternate location.

In either case I cannot foresee a magic cure-all process/configuration to solve this with a "flick of the switch".
