Just curious how most techs perform upgrades....One of our tech just returned from Mitel class and said he was told when doing an upgrade to perform a Full Install via the MCD Installer tool then do a database restore...instructor said doing a full install instead of selecting "Upgrade" via MCD Installer tool cleans out the old MCD software much better....I thought doing "Upgrade" did the same thing as Full Install except upgrade performs a backup and restore in one motion along with upgrade.

This is stupid! Upgrade is a better way to go as it leaves an easy way back via the SWAP command. In the past there where versions that has given some language and dimension problems, but not anymore.

agree with DoubleUT, upgrade via the software installer, as far as I know this creates a 2nd partition on the HDD and loads the software on this partition - hence the comment from the instructor is rubbish!in the event of issues you then have a simple option to use the swap commadn to return to the previous version

If I ever have a need to perform a full install I still modify the VX works settings - dont use software installer.

I use full install on 2 occasions.

1) when I'm upgrading across several loads (from 7 to MCD4.0 for e.g.)

2) When I don't need everything Full install allows you to deselect unnecessary items.

From the Instructors perspective I can understand the mindset that a Full install is cleaner and thus preferable. The reality however is that it takes longer and the benefits do not warrant the risks of formatting the drive.

If you ever want to do a Full Install on a live system, make sure you have a spare hard drive if the existing one has been in service for more than 2 years. You'll thank me if you ever corrupt a drive as I have in at least 2 instances.

What's most important is that you realise ... There is no spoon.

Agree with kwbMitel. Upgrades are really only for moving within partitcular loads i.e MCD 4.0 to MCD 4.0 SP1. If you are moving between MCD 4 and 4.1 I always do a full install. I thought that only the FixPartition command totally wiped a drive.

One other point, since the MCD software is only available via download, make sure you run the checksum on the downloaded file. Ran into an issue with what we think was a corrupted download file.

My 2 cents.

I'd tell you a UDP joke but I'm afraid you won't get it. TCP jokes are the best because you always get them.
