hi guys
just doing an upgrade of my dads computer from windows 98 to windows 2000, has any body come across any problems before, it is an intel based machine, should i watch out for anything?

I have to reformatted the hard drive first don't I ..?

Backup any data needed, that is always safest to proceed!

You don't have to reformat, but it would be a cleaner install because with an upgrade, you inherit all the 'bad' things too, which could cause problems.
Of course, if you do a reformat, you will need to re-install all applications too.

If you just pop in the upgrade CD, it will upgrade. If anything fails, you will still have the data backup.

I didn't realise there was an "upgrade" to 2000 from 98. Aren't they two entirely different approaches to o/s?

j0ckser - yes they are - which is one reason the upgrade is often unstable (because its more a rebuild than an upgrade - but maintaining 98 settings, where possible) & clean install is better.

My advice...back up the data. fdisk the whole drive...then Install Win2k. As much as I like SE, Win98 is often times too much of a blast from the past.

Ben,
No offense, but I think you're the 3rd person in this thread to recommend a clean install!
