Hi,

I have W2K3 R2 Standard installed on a server and want to change to SBS2003 R2 Premium (don't ask why!). Anyway, the documents all say this should be ok. But when I run the install it fails.

The only cause for the failure is in the C:\Exchange Server Setup Progress.log file (no other log files are created and Event Viewer also shows nothing). This log file says the domainprep and forestprep haven't been run. There is nowhere in any document that I can find that says that either of these need to be run. Normally with E2K3 these would be run but not for SBS.

Any ideas why this is happening and/or how to get around it?

Cheers

Nope. Uninstalling SP2 made no difference.

Has anyone seen this before and know how to fix it?

Thx

Is the machine you are upgrading currently a DC?

Yes, it's a DC and the only server we have. Will that make a difference? Should I demote it to a standalone (losing all AD info) and start again. It's not a big deal as it's a new business with only 3 users at the moment. I'd rather not if possible. Also have quite a lot of shared data - if I demote and restore the data I'll still be able to access it??

Looks like it won't upgrade an existing DC. I demoted it and am currently installed SBS 2003.

Nice of Mr Gates to put that in one of the many documents. It must've been in the fine fine fine print which is why I missed it!

So for anyone else who comes across this thread, you cannot upgrade a W2K3 R2 DC to SBS 2003 R2 without demoting it from a DC first.
