I have a customer that has Oracle 8.0 client installed on his WinNT workstation. They need to be running 8.1.6. When they tried to run 8.1.6's install, it wouldn't over write the older version. They also can't find an uninstall for Oracle 8.0.

Any suggestions? Terry M. Hoey

The installer should find all the products currently installed,
before the upgrade is run. If it doesn't, there is something
wrong with their 816 disk. Jim

The installer did see that there was an older version, but would not let it upgrade or remove the other version. At least that is what I was told. I will call and verify. Thanks for the quick response. Terry M. Hoey

I think that the problem is related to the fact that Oracle replaced the old installer with the new "Universal Installer". I've gotten errors that the Universal Installer can't use an Oracle home that was created by the old installer. I'm not sure why.

You can get around this limitation by installing Oracle 8i in a different Oracle home.

The 8.0 client that is currently on the workstation will include the old installer. You should be able to use it to deinstall almost all 8.0 products. Unfortunately it won't deinstall itself, so cleanup is a problem. I seem to recall several posts about how to completely deinstall Oracle from a machine.
