Upgrading to USB 2.0 without SP1 Installed

I've purchased a USB 2.0 PCI card and am hoping to install it in my machine which is running Windows XP.

Will XP recognise the card without having Service Pack 1 installed?

I don't want to install SP1 as I tried it before and had endless problems with graphics not being displayed on IE6 amoungst other problems.

If anybody can advise I'd appreciate it.
