Hello all,

I am trying to upgrade my MSDE to SQL Server Express. I can afford an offline upgrade, so I installed SQL Server Express. Now from what I know I am just supposed to reattach the existing database files to SQL Express. However everytime I copy the files onto my local drive from the network drive, they show up as read only. I have the exact same rights and privileges as I had when i was on MSDE.
I can manually go and change the privileges on the files but its supposed to happen through my wise installer.
Can anyone help?

If the network share you are going through is setup as Read Only then the files will be marked as read only.

All you should need to do is copy the files to the new machine, and attach them. You will need read/write access to the files to attech them however (or at least the SQL Server will need read/write access).

Hi MrDenny,

Is it possible to upgrade an instance of MSDE to SQL Server Express?

I have a Great Plains db that is about a half Gb away from the 2 Gb limit and it is my understanding that the Express version lets you go up to 4 Gb's.

Thanks In Advance

Yes you can upgrade from MSDE to SQL Express.

Hi Mr.Denny,

Can I have MSDE and SQL Express instances on the same machine?

Thanks In Advance

If they both only use Default instances instead of named instances, then no, you can't.

If Express uses Named Instances, then you should be able to run a side-by-side.

Yes you can provided that one of them is a named instance.
