upgrading to Notes 6.5

i installed a new server loaded lotus notes 6.5 domino.
going through the setup selected an existing admin id, cert id, etc from our old r5 server. after the setup was complete i copied the r5 server names.nsf over to the new server. started the domino server and everything was there config. docs, server docs etc. and all users in the domino directory. i upgraded the names.nsf by replacing the design with the 6.5 domino directory template. now all the server docs, and users are gone ?
what did i do wrong, or how do i upgrade the names.nsf to the 6.5 version ?

Hello,
I would install the OS on your new box and patch.
1. Install the same Domino version as your old server (use the same paths)
2. Rename your data directory on the new box to data_old.
3. Copy the data directory over from your old server
4. Rename the notes.ini on the new server to notes.old. 5. Copy the notes.ini iver from your old server and place it in the Notes program directory
6. Start Notes on the new box
7. Confirm that server is running and configured like the old box
8. Down Notes and install/upgrade to R6.5

Note: Make sure Notes is down when you're copying
