I have a multimode fiber backbone already in place and would like to upgrade my connections to gpbs. Am I correct in assuming all I need to do is add gigabit NICs, switches and converters (where needed) to my existing fiber?

Thanks,

Pat Russell

Single mode with LX electronics is fine for 5 KM.
Multimode with LX electronics can do at least 550 meters in 50 and 62.5 nanometers
Multimode with SX electronics can do at least 220 meters in 62.5 nanometers
Multimode with SX electronics can do at least 500 meters in 50 nanometers

Hope this helps

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

I switched from FDDI to gigE in 1998 with no changes to my infrastructure at all, my buildings were all already close enough or far enough that my singlemode and multimode was well placed.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

the spec says single is 2700m to hcc (if there is a hcc)and finaly 300m to drop with no hcc 3000m total
multi is 1700 with hcc and 300 to drop or 2000 total tia/eia 568 b.3-1
