Is it possible to upgrade the firmware on a p550 other than via the HMC? That is, can it be installed via the AIX command line?

hello,

yes, but from the few tests I made it's better from the HMC.

First, in the firmware of the machine (connect vie the ASMI interface), set "Firmware upgrade policy" to "Operating system".

Then in the properties of the physical server (from the HMC interface), specifiy as service partition the on from which you want the upgrade to be done.

You can than use the 'diag' utility or the update_flash command from the command line to updat'e the server's firmware.

Cons :
- once, altough these requirements were ok (on an openpower), the system didn't want to make the upgrade.
- it seems not to be always mandatory, but you better reboot the whole server (and therefore it's partitions).

regards,
