It's been a long time since I've done Novell service packs on 6.5, but the real tip is to read the README that's included for any warnings or cautions or prerequisites.
I'll tell you three things to do regardless.
1. DS Repair until no errors. Allow server to run for a while after that (20 minutes).
2. REM out unnecessary items in Autoexec.ncf so as to be running with a minimum. Not system stuff, but NDPS printing and third party applications (backup programs???) + GroupWise, anti-virus, etc.
3. Reboot and make sure anything extra IS turned off.
As for the other patches, you have to read each one that appears chronologically after SP8 and see if it applies to you. Especially important are ones that mention problems with things that you are running or DS or core items. It's a pain, but I don't know another way of doing it.
