Hi

I have 3 levels of primary sites in our SMS hierarchy.

Central Site
|
Reporting Server
|
----------------|firewall|---Test level
| | |
PS1 PS2 PS3
| | |
Secondary Sites

When upgrading to SP2 can I upgrade the Test level before upgrading any of the higner levels or does the upgrade need to be applied from the Central Site down the hierarchy?

Good question, I don't think it should make any difference, you just wont get the SP2 features, which i think, if i remember correctly SQL2005 beta version (not full version) support, 64bit support, and not much else, baseline platform for R2 aswell. Doesn't change the opperation of the system.

Hope this Helps.

Microsoft recommend you use a top down approach when upgrading to SP2

Haga is correct on that, I don't see why you wouldn't apply it in your whole site, but if you do decide to plant it mid-way, shouldn't actually make any difference to the opporation, but for standardisation sakes, i would put it at the top and distro down.

Hope this Helps.

I know that Microsofts recommendation is to install the upgrade from the top down. The question was asked because our testing Primary Sites are children of the Reporting Server Primary Site but are behind a firewall. The company policy is always to install upgrades on our two levels of testing environment before putting into live.
Thanks for the advise.

Go for it then ;) Good luck.

Hope this Helps.
