our domain controller, exchange2003 server, and file server all run on old compaq server hardware and windows2003. We would slowly like to migrate each one to new Dell hardware this year. What is the easiest way to tranfer the systems to new hardware?

one method that I heard of but never tried is to use acronis imaging software which allows you to restore to different hardware.

any recommendations?

thanks

I always like using some sort of "swing" method when moving servers with such critical roles. So, for example, I would get the new hardware, install Windows, make it a Domain Controller and let it replicate with the old server. Transfer all of the roles to the new server, then demote the old Domain Controller. Same with Exchange. Install Exchange on a new server and move the mailboxes over. Then remove Exchange from the old server. I know this is vague. If you search Microsoft's site, there are white papers on the proper way to remove Exchange and Active Directory. For the file server, I would simply do a backup of the old server and restore the folders and files to the new servers. Just make sure you have back ups of everything, do your research and planning in advance. Good Luck.

I have had excellent luck using Acronis with the Universal Restore feature, but I've not done it to a DC or Exch server.

I would definately second pgaliardo's comments regarding the swing method. It's how I've migrated from 2000 to 2003 and am currently migrating my 2000 Exchange server to a new 2007 server.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.
