hi all,
I have a server that has been dumped in to my lap, the box itself has to be taken away ( long story) and a new one put in it's place. it is the DC and the new beastie will take over that roll as well so what is the easiest way of taking all the info i need off the old pc and adding it to the new one? I need to do this and cause the min amount of disturbance to the network. Due to security on site i can't work too long after hours.
If i just add the new one as a member server then copy all data over from the old pc take the old pc off line promote the new one to dc and then add install DNS and AD (only small thank god)that should work shouldn't it?

Regards
Max

I would DCpromo the new server into the AD domain. Move all of the FSMO roles to the new server.

If it is only a file server then you would have to recreate the shares and security permissions.

There are some third party tools that can gather all this info for you. I believe sysinternals "now MS" has some.

If you have backup exec you could also do a restore of all the data and it will retain all of the file permissions.

Generally that should work... neither server is Small Business Server, is it?

no the old one is standard the new one is enterprise.

joepc has it right. Install the new server, dcpromo it to a DC, transfer all the FSMO roles. Transfer all of the shares/applications/services to the new server. Give it a day or so to replicate. Then demote the old server so that it is no longer a DC. Take it offline, then delete it from AD.
