Hi,

We're currently using version 7 of Pervasive but have finally decided to bite the bullet and upgrade. We are unsure of whether we would upgrade to 2000 or if we could do a direct jump to the latest version. We were also wondering if there was some really good documentation out there or even some things to watch out for. I have a 7 to 2000 upgrade document and a what's new in v8 document which I got from the Pervasive site.

Thanks,
Tom

You can skip 2000. In fact, I would recommend skipping it as that version is already in transition support according to Pervasive. The differences between 2000 and V8 are mainly performance from the SQL side so the v7 to 2000 document will, for the most part, apply to a v7 to V8 upgrade as well. The biggest gotcha to watch out for is if your v7 program uses the Scalable SQL API. It'll have to be re-written as Pervasive removed it from 2000 and V8. For Btrieve API programs, there should be little to no changes needed other than upgrading the server and the client requesters.

Hi Mirtheil,

Thanks for the response - I was wondering if you knew if Pervasive had any consultancy services based in the UK or Ireland - just in case we want someone to hold our hand while we do this.

Thanks again,
Tom

Being in the US, I'm not aware of any but you might check with Pervasive.

Thanks for that - I fired a mail off to info@pervasive.com - I suppose we'll see how that works out.

Thanks again

I know this is a little late (about a month), but some of the Key problems I've had, is the Date formatting. We used to specify the Date format we wanted Pervasive to return in V7 and it doesn't work in V2000i, everything needs to have the dates send in Strict Sql Format '2003-08-01'.
Another annoying thing is the fact that if your data base is old enough there will be some Datafields with Nothing in them, No nulls, no spaces, V7 recognised them as nulls. One more thing is trimming spaces, TRIM every field, depending on the environment you are working in, (I was working in VB ASP) Len will return the length of the Field rather than then the Data contained in the field.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for that - we are still @ the planning stage but we have to get it all in and ready by the end of Q1 next year - we're not only upgrading Pervasive but the application that is based on it as well.

Thanks again,
Tom
