I have a client that has 1 server. It’s a PDC running NT4 and exchange5.5.
They just bought a new windows 2000 server and want to migrate from the old server to the new one(they want the old server gone).

Any ideas?

I know how to migrate a NT4 PDC to a Windows 2000 DC. And I know how to migrate a 5.5 box to a exchange 2k box, but I have no idea how to do both at the same time on the same box...

You should keep both servers going until migration is complete.

When you install 2000, you'll have the opportunity to tell exchange about your old 5.5 server. This'll set up an SRS service on 2000 that'll allow communication between 5.5 and 2000.

Then, your only decision will be whether to use Move Mailbox or to export mailboxes to PST and import into new mailboxes in 2000..!

You could consider building the new server as a NT4 BDC in the current domain. Then demote the current PDC to a BDC and promote the new BDC to a PDC. Once thats done do an in place upgrade of the new server (PDC) to Windows 2000 Server and do the whole DCPROMO thing.
Now install Exchange 2000 and join the Exchange 5.5 organization. Install the Active Directory connector to populate the AD with Ex5.5 directory objects and move the mailboxes for Ex5.5 to Ex2K.
Once all that's complete follow the Microsoft KB Article # 248148 to remove the Exchange 5.5 server.

Good Luck!
