I am doing a upgrade from NT4.0 to 2000 pro and when it starts the upgrade it comes up with an error "existing software was not fully installed. " When you click details it says you just need to reboot and let software finish installing and then upgrade should restart. Rigghhht....there is NO other software running and I have restarted the machine. I get the same error everytime. Any ideas? I really don't want to reload this machine unless I have to.

I have dealt with this and I had to completely wipe the drive and reload. Sorry.

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.

I would agree with DestinysDream. Backup any critical data first then repartition and start from scratch. I always try to install from scratch instead of upgrade. 99.9% of the time it is effective. Even this sometimes fails but that is usually due to hardware issues.
