I have a Gateway Select 1400cs, and wanted to upgrade my Athlon 1.4 to an Athlon XP 1800+. I spoke with Gateway and they said that it would work with no problem. I installed the CPU, and Heatsink/Fan and started the system. There were no POST beeps, but you could hear the HDD's getting upto speed. It never had any Video output, or anything. Any ideas? When I put the old CPU back in, it started up fine.

Check your motherboard manual for any jumper configurations to do with different speeds. Then go back to Gateway to ask them, try to speak to someone technical. It's possible that the CPU is DOA.

Most likely jumper configurations need to be changed.

First, find out the Front Side Bus settings for the new processor.

Then refer to your manual to find the right jumper to set the FSB correctly.

Yo Bro the best answer I can recomend to you is to check your motherboard setting. The Athlon 1.4 has a FSB of 100mhz, so upgrading to Athlon XP 1800+ your FSB should be 133mhz or higher. Find the jumper setting on the board or if its jumperless change it in the CMOS.

Knowledge is a gift from God sharing it with friends and strangers, make you a better person, inside and outside.
