I do not have a lot of experience with fresh installs and can not find specific instructions on upgrading the hardware from LX to MXeIII. The goal is to migrate the system to 5.0.

I think all I need to do is install the 4. os and restore the database then up grade to 5.0.

You need the Latest 4.0 SW to be compatible with the MXe-III (Sp4 I think)
Backup the LX
The LX DB can be uploaded directly without pre-work/modification -
Transfer the Licenses to the MXe-III
Up load to MXe-III - Make Sure MXe-III has same IP address as original box
Then Backup
You then must follow all of the steps to migrate the DB to SDS mode
Then Backup
Then Migrate the DB
Then Backup
Then Upgrade to rel 5.0
Then Backup

The are dozens of other sub-steps. If you are not familiar, I suggest hiring an expert.

If you think I was going overboard with the backup thing, think again, and hire an expert.

What's most important is that you realise ... There is no spoon.

From a migration guide someone sent me.

Section 1: Migrating path from LX, Mx, Cx/Cxi to Mxe
Migration Path to Mxe Migration steps
LX (256, or 512 RAM)
250 User platform
700 User platform
Pre-migration Steps
There is no requirement to pre-delete any programming from LX database; i.e. one can convert LX database to Mxe.

Post –migration step
a> After LX database restore, access System IP Configuration and program up the L2 switch IP address. The controller must be rebooted after changing the L2 switch IP address to make it effective.

b> If one is migrating from a platform with more than 250 IP device/user licenses, it is recommended that E2T card be installed on Mxe.

I'd tell you a UDP joke but I'm afraid you won't get it. TCP jokes are the best because you always get them.
