We're getting ready to upgrade customer's Legend 3.0 to a Magix 4.0 and was wondering what steps were involved to properly upgrade their system. We are also install a Merling Messaging R4.0 to replace their existing Messaging R1.0 to a R4. Can we use the 4 port license card from the R1 in the R4? Any input would be greatly appreciatd.

You can use the port license card with no problem. If the custormer has any ATL analog modules (for BIS type and older Merlin analog phones) - they will no longer work. If not, you can use WinSPM R9.0 to save and upgrade to Magix R4 their system information from the old Legend R3. Assuming no modules will be replaced - you should be set. I am assuming you will reuse the Legend box. If you are upgrading to a Magix box and different modules - you will need to reprogram from scratch. Do a "print all" using WinSPM from the old system to guide you in reprogramming.

First, make sure that you don't have any ATL cards in the old Legend system. If you do, you can't convert the current translations, you would need to reprogram from scratch.

If the current cards are all supported, use WinSPM to download the current translations, use the "convert" utility if WinSPM to change the translations to be compatable with the Magix release you are installing, and upload them to the Magix processor. Hopefully, you have a spare cabinet and power supply, so you don't have to take the system down during the upload process.

Then change the processor and you should be good to go. The port license card can be swapped from the R1 to the R4 with no problem.

Many thanks to tdaugirdas and TouchToneTommy for your prompt replies, your suggestions will save me a lot of frustration and customer dissatifaction.

I just worked on one of these with ATL boards, VM upgrade and legend to merlin. It was not too bad.
If I recall right we replaced the ATL boards first to boards that would be supported on the legend and magix(had to use clamshells on some of the boards so they would fit in the old legend back plane). We had to replace one power supply as well, I think the old one in there would not supply enough power. Did a back up to the pc.
Then converted to magix, upload and away we went. Installed the new VM module while we had the power suppply out and changed processor. It was not too bad. I did have a document from avaya on the process from their web site. They were moving so we did it during the move, and they were closed for business for the day so it was not a big time crunch. The ATL board was replaced with an ETR to support some old transtalks they moved over as well.

These guys TD and TTT really have this down, and gave you the full scoop. I just did it for the first time two weeks ago so I wanted to tell you, don't worry it wasn't bad.
