I was an administrator for a small company and managed a small LAN. Recently, we noticed that our Compaq Proliant ML800 server was running out of space. So, we are thinking about to upgrade the SCSI HDD.

According to one of the vendor's suggestion. We have to buy 2 SCSI HDD (for mirroring purpose) and reinstall the whole junk start from the scratch. We do not want to do that because it will take up a lot of times & efforts (also means $$) in NOS and ERP system. Anyone here having better suggestion besides above-mentioned solution given.

And also anyone knows what SCSI HDD was used for ML800 ??? I needs to know the exact model and the largest capacity SCSI HDD we can used for ML800. Please help..

Thanks.

Probably what the vendor meant was: Backup the existing HD. Install new HD. Install O/S. Restore data. The best method might depend upon which network O/S you are using. What is it?

Thx for your reply on my question. We are using Windows NT4.

You are right. The vendor is trying to backup, reinstall & restore the system. But we are more worried about the ERP system. It will be very costly for us to get the technical people from oversea to re-configure that thing. And also it might take few days time to complete this task.

One of my friend actually give me an idea which is using Norton Ghost Copy method. That is, we clone the exsiting system into a new & bigger's SCSI HDD to keep the risk and downtime as minimum as we can. Is it feasible if we do in this way??

Can anyone here provide me more information about my SCSI HDD. Because i was not well verse in SCSI stuff.

Thanks..

I would visit the compaq site for more info regarding the exact hardware specs on your proliant 800...but what you need to do is obtain Arcserve for NT and the Disaster recovery agent. You will then be able to make generic recovery bootdisks for use on any machine. Make a full backup of your existing server...install the new hardware complete with partitions etc...then use the disaster recovery disks and the backup media to restore your server to it's original status (with more HDD space) :)

Why not keep the exisiting HDD's, install an additional SCSI card, add more disks and create a new array? You would then preserve the existing system and increase the disk space. Alternatively if money is available, and you anticipate needing more space in the future, purchase an Compaq external storage array. This would enable you to install up to 14 x 36gb, for example. See for further details.
