Since I bought my three 3640 i haven't come around to put a recent IOS in them... they are running like ver 11.2. So time for upgrade...lol. What IOS do you recommend with the right features for CCNA home lab and what method do you use to upgrade and manage the IOS's. On one of the 3640 there is a 16meg flash, can that come in handy as well?

bongonetworker,

For CCNA you really want some flavor of 12.4 IOS so that you see everything that you could be tested on. With 11.2 you will be seeing commands or command sytax that you will NOT see on 12.4 so - move over to a current IOS.

As far as upgrading you should download a TFTP server software - you can get it FREE at Solar Winds -

This just runs on any PC - you need to understand the process of backing up so start by saving the config and the current IOS to the TFTP.

You can use the 16mg FLASH - HOWEVER, you might and will see (could see) questions on using a TFTP - so I think I would have that down :)

Hope this helps!

Here is what I would do...

Upgrade to 32MB flash and 128MB DRAM via Ebay (cheap). Then, contact this dude named Burt (fake name) at

tim and liz h at gmail dot com (all one word, ampersand, no "at"...lol). He may have a "practice" IOS, as he has an agreement with Cisco for "practice" platforms...he also has a 3640 with Advanced Enterprise 12.4(23), 32/128, which does everything and will have you giggling with delight like a Catholic high school cheerleader dating The Fonz...a-a-a-a-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y!!!!

Burt,

You are too nice - as usual :)

Bongonetworker, that is some good advice - if I were you I would follow EXACTLY what Burt has listed and just DO IT!!!

Bong,
Looks like Tim and Gene took care of you but I just wanted to point out that you will want an IP Plus IOS release at a minimum! Tim can explain!

Use this tool now and in the future when trying to determine what type IOS will fit your needs!

Whoa..teh fonz tehehe. I checked that on youtube funny but way before my time lol.

Tim I am grateful for the offer. You will definately hear from me as soon as I get around upgrading them.

And B Haines the feature navigator is great because i've a new arrival, a 2610 which needs an upgrade as well.
