I have a Powermac G3 blue and white tower. I haven't touched its innards since I bought it but I'm now trying to upgrade it into a video editing workstation. So far I've just started by maxing out the ram. Next I need to add as big a hard-drive as possible and then the most important thing, the video card. I've been looking around but I've been a bit intimidated by the techie jargon. This is what I want: a card whereby I can plug in a VCR, camcorder or other analog video device, digitize the signal, edit it on the computer and then pump it back out on to the VCR.
1.Do I need seperate video and audio cards?
2.Do I need to upgrade the graphics card that runs the monitor too?
3. Does keeping everything in DV format reduce my costs?
4. Are there any ways to turn a G3 into a G4?

I'm trying to stay within a budget around $2000. What's the best I can do?

The B&W G3 uses a PCI Graphics Card , IDE Hard Drives, and a ZIF based CPU

is a graphics card still made for PCI

the B&W is limited to 128 gig drives, this one is fast

the B&W can be upgraded to a 800 Mhz G3

or a 1 Ghz G4

(I am not affiliated with OWC, I just found their ad first)

you may wish to check out what G4 you can get on ebay for $2000, then sell the B&W there

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

You'll want a capture card. For what you're doing, the matrox rt mac card would probably be just fine. It'll allow you to capture analog video, do your thing, and print to tape. It's like $599. You can spend alot more on cards, but most would be overkill unless you're connecting to higher end beta equipment.
