Hello:

I am in the process of upgrading from Paradox 9 to Paradox 11.

This is what I did:

1. Installed.

2. Copied the Update.ssl script into the work directory and ran it. (It ran fine)

I read in the knowledge base that following will not migrate to Paradox 11.

forms.fdl
reports-rdl
scripts-sdl
libraries-ldl

There are several scripts that this application uses that I can not access because they are .sdl files.
I tried renaming the file to .SSL. that gave me a file error.

Is there a free editor out there that I can edit them with and then maybe do a copy/paste into a ssl file?

Thanks in advance

Paul

Tony:

Don't mean to ask what I hope is not a silly question:

What do you mean by 'source versions'?

Source versions of the scripts?

Is 'source versions' some kind of add on to paradox?

What is so weird is that I can not even open these in Paradox 9.

Thanks

'Source versions' are the ones ending in .ssl, fsl, lsl, rsl, etc.

These are the versions of the files you use to create/edit the scripts/reports/etc that are used.

Each version of Paradox uses a different format for the 'delivered' version; the .sdl, fdl, ldl, rdl etc.

These 'delivered' versions cannot be read from any version of Paradox except the one that created them.

Source versions work between the various versions of Paradox. Delivered versions do not.

Ok I think I got what your saying.

I tried to edit a .sdl in paradox 9, which I think that is where it was written in.

Could not edit it.

So I backed up the script and opened it in wordpad and scanned for the invaild extensions and found two, I changed them and tried to run the script. Paradox now gives me a disk error.

What does the red dot on the upper left corner of the script image on the file name mean?

Thanks Again.

Tony:

Yes it is within Paradox I see the red on the file name.

SO how do I open these script files and fix the issue?

IS there a way to find out what version these scripts were written in?

Thanks

Tony:

All I have is the old .sdl but I can't edit them!!!
Cannot believe that there is no way to edit or convert these scripts.

I have been in the computer field for 20+ years (As/400 and PC stuff) and have never seen a product like this before.

They want you to upgrade and when you do you are screwed!

Is it becuase this products has changed hands so much?

Thank you very much for all your help.

No, it was designed that way so a DEVELOPER could create (using source files) and distribute (using delivered files) a program without worrying about the end user making changes.

Never seen?

You mean you've never heard of source code for Visual Basic? Or Delphi?

And you've never heard about that source code being compiled into an .exe file?

Well, on a lighter basis look at Paradox as doing the same thing - source files and compiled/delivered files.

Except with Paradox you CAN use purely source files; you aren't *required* to only use the compiled/delivered version.

As to version to version changes, it has been that way since Paradox 1 for Windows.

SOURCE files are usable from version to version (up anyway), but DELIVERED files can only be USED by the version that created them.

And DELIVERED files cannot be modified by ANY version.

Now, let's see what they say over on CNEWS.

Tony:

about 10 minutes after I posted my last reply I figured out what you were telling me.

Yes I have used VB and again that is what I thought of when I got what you were trying to tell me.

Also Tomy very sorry for posting the same question on more then one forum.

The problem is the developer is long gone from this project and I can't find the sources for these scripts.

Let me hunt around the clients site next week again!!!!

Thanks and have a great holiday.
