Upgrading from Mercator to DSTX

Hi All,

We are thinking of migrating from mercator 6.7.1 to DSTX 8.0

The main deterrent is that it seems we have to recompile all the maps in order to make them compatible with the new version. This is because our server admin group decided that all resource registries need to be different, they wanted to clean up the directory structure etc etc.

However we have about 500 maps which would need to be recompiled.

Is there any way that the upgrade can be done real quickly without recompiling every map. I mean supposing I just bring the old mercator down and startup DSTX and point it to the old directories from mercator, would that work?

Another option is to ghost the box and not have mercator on it and instead install DSTX and work through any issues and then just make the new box the production box?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

My understanding is that the 6.7.1 maps are compatible with 8.0 event server/command server. However, if you don't recompile the maps and type trees then you won't be get all the benefits of the upgrade.
I have run 6.7.1 maps under 8.0 and 8.1 ok.

Problem is with the resource registry. You might get away without recompiling each map if you leave the variables the same and the registry files are in the same location they always were.

Also, you can add all of the maps, both event and run, to your 8.0 system (msd) files. You wouldn't need to open each individually. They get recompiled at deployment time against the new registry. If you have something in a map that doesn't work/compile in 8.0 it should be reflected at that time.

You can also run multiple versions on the same machine. So your production box could run both 6.7.1 and 8.0. That might provide you with some cush if there's a problem compiling a map into 8.0. You could recompile it in 6.7 pointing to you new paths until you can debug the conversion.

Maps only get compiled if deployed through IFD. Then you would be using production maps which haven't been tested.
You should retest any maps that are recompiled prior to go live.
