We are about to implement a new ePO server running 3.0.
We are going to replace the old server with the new one (Same computer name and ip address). The old server ran ePO 2.51.

Will the existing agents on our PCs be able to connect to the new server, or do they need to be upgraded?

Thanks,
Jeannine

Hrm, good question. When I was running 2.5 I had the machines checking a share (\\virus_server\update) for their updates. I suppose, if you recreate that share with the appropriate files on your new server, they would quite happily keep updating on whatever schedule you have set.

I expect you'll need to reinstall the agents to do anything more than that though (policies, this new Master Repository thing, etc.).

HTH.

(I'm fairly new though, so maybe a more experienced user will know different.)

No need. The agents will report back to the new server and re-register themselves to ePO. The agents will also upgrade themselves to 3.0. Done that several times already.

Really? Cool. I thought you had to push v3, and it uninstalled the older version.

I assume you have to use the same ports or you'd be screwed?

Yes, you have to configure the new ePO 3.0 server to use EXACTLY the same ports, otherwise it won't work.

It is my understanding that if you do not upgrade the database then it will not work. There is a unique PGP key that is negoiated with the agent and the server. That's what our McAfee rep told us anyway. The database has all your sites and policies stored in it. You will have to redo everything if you do not upgrade.

Even if it doesn't work, I am not touching my old server. I'm building a new one on a better machine. If the agents don't auto upgrade, then I will bring my old server back online and upgrade that machine.

Once the agents are all upgraded, then I can shut down the old one and bring up a new one.

I'm pretty sure that this is a safe plan.
