Any particular reason you would want to do a Full backup/restore vs using the individual XLN,OS and Security backup files when upgrading CM? Just curious what others are doing out there in the wild.

From what I understand the full backup is just all 3 files restored in one step rather then doing XLN,OS and Security each for its own restore step.

Depends on what platform and CM software version.

CM5 and below, you are correct in your understanding.

Going from 6/7 to 8 or 7/8 to 10 is what I would be most curious about.

I ran both scenarios in my lab and could not see much of a difference in the restore, however it does appear the XLN method is faster even though you need to do 3 individual restores.
Unzipping the full backup file is just the 3 backup files (XLN,OS,Security) and some information about the backup in a .txt document.

When I upgrade to 8 I use the full backup. Done this many times without issue.

I typically have been using full, but was curious of the difference between the two. I read somewhere that OS includes the OS type and when switching from say a Virtual Machine on prem to cloud like AWS the OS could cause issues or even going from simplex to duplex you would not want to use the OS part of the backup.

OS and Security from cm5 would not be used when upgrading and changing the server platform. The xln is the CM translations.
OS is server configuration and Security is license and certificates, server logins and passwords.
