upgrading client library

Hi all,
i'm trying to connect to MySQL server 4.1 via PHP 4 with a user with password and i'm getting the following error:

Client does not support authentication protocol.

The problem doesn't occurs when the user has no password.
I have Client API version: 3.23.22-beta.
How can i upgrade my client library?
