Hi i have downloaded from ibm site ML7 to ML8 tar.gz file.i have g'zipped -d -c , the file, and extracted. The files show owner and group as numbers and not root and system.is this normal?i have cd'd to the directory and did inutoc.Any suggestions from here on...?

Also,is it better to use full ML8 tar file or use ML7_to_ML8 tar file to upgrade from ML7 to ML8?What's the betterway?

Appreciate your help..

Numbers where usernames or groupnames should be, just means that there are no correspondent user/group entries in your passwd/group.
For a ML it doesn't matter what uid/gid there is, as you install it as root anyway.

I guess there is no "better" for using ML8 or ML7_to_ML8 Update - it just depends on what current ML you have and how much you want to download.

No, root would not be the owner after you untar'd. The owner and group will be whatever numbers are stored in the tarball. There is nothing wrong with leaving these files as is, but you can just chown them so that root is the owner and system is the group if you want to be really safe.

Thanks a bunch...

Help needed in slightly unrelated area...How can i launch a Virtual console for Aix server from my desktop...running aix5.1thx

Either ssh (e.g. via PuTTY) into the HMC as user hscroot and run mkvterm:

mkvterm -m <your_managed_system> -p <partition_name>

or

mkvterm -m <your_managed_system> --id <partition_id>

(see man mkvterm and man rmvterm when logged into the HMC)

Other possibility: install the WebSM PC_client, connect to your HMC and open the console for the LPAR from there.
