Upgrading 1601 Flash card & IOS

I will be upgrading the flash card to accomodate for a newer IOS feature set. Unfortunately, this router is a Run From Flash model, so i'm assuming I will have to swap cards and boot from the mini-IOS in rom, and "copy tftp flash". Is this the best way to do it?

Also, i'm wondering when upgrading IOS feature set from 11.1 to 12.1, whether there will be any issues running the old config file. Theoretically the config should work fine, yes?
