Upgrade to ERP 5.6 Clear Bank Reconcile Posting Journal

Hey folks,
One of the documented requirements for upgrading to ERP 5.6 is to clear the bank reconciliation posting journal.
I'm assuming this is a must do but, generally speaking, I'd rather deal with a larger DB than delete data. Of course we take regular backups so data is never really gone but...
Has anyone done something more interesting than just following the upgrade instructions here?
Any other insight or advice appreciated.

The problem is that the tables, as they are, don't have enough information to be upgraded successfully so Sage has you purge the data.
