Hi !
I'm about to upgrade my three NW 5.1(SP5) NDS 8 servers to eDirectory 8.7.
I was hoping that someone out there who has done this could share their experience with me, do's and dont's.

I've read the edir 8.7 quick start document from Novell and from that I assume that I must start upgrading the server holding the master replica and extend the schema first, am I right ?

All my servers has different roles and apps. installed:
server #1: ZEN 3.0
server #2: GroupWise 5.5
server #3: BorderManager 3.7, Certificate Authority

Are there any special issues regarding these applications that I must consider before upgrading ?

No considerations on the apps, however, if you can find a copy, intall NDS 85 first, then go to 87. NDS can have a hemerage if it jumps up to many versions (not a fun thing to fix). It should work fine going stright to 87, but it's better safe than sorry.

Be sure that you never have more that two differnet versions on DS in a replica ring at any point in time.

If youhave plans on upgrading to 6.0, do not upgrade your DS to 87, 86 should still be avilable. If youcan't find the DS version you are looking for, track down either a CNE software pack or call your local channel partner to obtain a copy (you can also beg NTS for it). Thanks for your suggestions !
I've done a test upgrade on another server going from
NDS 8.82 to eDirectory 8.7.
This server had webserver and ZEN 3.0 installed, no problems found so far.

Should I start my upgrade on server #2:GroupWise 5.5 wich also holds the master replica ?

Regards

Take one of your servers and make it a master of all replicas if you can. Start with the server that holds a master of root. Any other server would fail when it tried to do schema updates. You can only update the schema from the master of root. Brent Schmidt CNE,Network + [atom]

You don't have to do it on your Master [Root] server, as long as the server contains at least a Read/Write replica of [Root], you will be ok otherwise (as Brent has already said), the schema updates will fail. -----------------------------------------------------
