I have a Toshiba e310, with Windows Mobile 2002 (3.0) installed. Would it be possible to upgrade this to the newer 5.0 system?
I'm currently working on a project in VB.NET using CE 5.0, so would it be possible to upgrade either the PPC or convert the code in order to work with the PPC? Thanks.

Upgrading the OS on a PDA is not like upgrading a desktop PC's OS. Windows Mobile 2002 & 2003 devices boot from ROM, so to upgrade from 2002 to 2003 you need a new device-specific ROM image provided by the manufacturer. WM 2005 devices boot from flash memory, so it's unlikely that a 2002/3 device will have enough flash memory to hold the OS and leave any spare. Even if it did have the room you'd still need a device-specific upgrade from the manufacturer. Check their web site but I doubt you'll have any luck.

As for converting your project to CE 3.0 you'll probably have to do this by hand, i.e. create a new 3.0 project and re-write everything that you can't just copy & paste.

Ok, thanks for the advice. Could you start me off on how to create a 3.0 project and some converstion tips? Thanks.

Unfortunately I'm not really sure as I've never developed anything for the PPC other than a tiny test application. Does the device you're writing for support the .Net Compact Framework? In Visual Studio 2005 I can choose a new C# or VB 'Smart Device' project and then pick whether it targets the 1.0 or 2.0 version of the framework.

If you want to write a native (i.e. not .Net) application you have to use C++ or a pre-.Net version of VB and - I think - install the relevant CE SDK. I found this Microsoft link which might be the 3.0 SDK:

Handheld PC Professional 3.0 SDK

As for how you actually work with it I have no idea as I've never attempted it. Good luck though!
