Hi,

I have an oracle 8i database which needs to be upgraded to 91.

Can someone tell me what sofware i need for this and where to get it: (windows server 2003)
Do I need any patches?

Also what is the best procedure for upgrading the data? What are the options?
Is an export/import the best bet?

Personally, I'd install Oracle 9i into a separate ORACLE_HOME and then migrate the schemas using export/import.

Why ? I find applying upgrades to Oracle pretty laborious, and having a separate environment lets me prove the migration while the users can continue working on the old system. We also found code issues - eg 9i is stricter with stored proc. declarations. Also, the optimiser had to be set back to 8.1.7 mode until we sorted out some queries.

The software itself you can download from Oracle's web site. As far as I know, 9.2.0.1 is the latest (last?) 9i version to have a full install kit. There's a patch download as well to take you up to 9.2.0.6

BTW, you're not linking to Oracle 7, are you ? That won't work from Oracle 9

Best of Luck !

Steve

hi,

its an upgrade from oracle 8i

Thanks for your views

I have successfully used the Oracle Database Upgrade Assistant (dbua) on several occasions.

ken,

does the dbua do the complete conversion for you or are there some manual steps?

The dbua does the lot, and I haven't had any issues (so far anyway, 3 months later). However, as always, take a look at the documentation first and come back here with any doubts! Good luck.

Hi,

just been informed that the oracle software (8i) has been removed so I guess that means that I cannot startup the 8i database in order to use dbua to upgrade it.

to the export then:
I plan to create a new database with 9i.(create all the users, tablespaces etc)
I have a full export from the 8i database.
I'm just going to do a full export into 91.

Does anyone foresee any problems?

oracle software (8i) has been removed" [surprise] - that's a bit risky ! Fingers crossed that your export file isn't corrupt.

Have you got access to Oracle Metalink ? Note:132904.1 goes into all the gory details of import and export compatibility between versions.

8.1.7 to 9.2 should be OK, but, first, have a read at that article if you can.

As you're doing a full import, create the tablespaces so that you get the files where you want them, but don't bother creating the users - a full import will do that for you.

Best of Luck !!

Steve

thanks steve,

i have a couple of expports and also cold backups!

I'm not sure if a full import would work but single schema should (fromuser, touser).
The Oracle9i Database Migration Guide tells you how to perform a "commandline migration", which is a dbua migration without gui. I usually prefere this method, as it gives you more control over what happens.
