I´ve got two NetBackup 3.4.1 servers and I want to upgrade it to NetBackup 4.5. Can I do it installing v.4.5 in a new machine and moving the catalog to this new machine?
I would suggest that this wouldn't be a good idea. I do not know netbackup very well, but I have worked with backups for a few years now. What you are proposing would have a new version working with an old version catalog.
What I would suggest, is that you do a restore of your server to a test machine, and perform an upgrade. This way you can predict problems that may occur. If you have a complicated environment that is not easily replicated, check out a hardware solution that will allow several servers of different versions or different applications to control the same jukebox. I know StorageTek supply this, but I cannot remember the name of the device, appart from it starting with a 6!! Sorry.
For extra safety, consult Veritas on the compatability of it's latest version with any old or unusual software / os you may have.
I have upgraded our 3.4.1 environment with 32 media servers to 4.5 without problem. This included copying over all data, converting it to binary, changing a multitude of scripts etc and I can do Restores without problem.
The procedure is fairly lengthy and is done with the aid of a script that I wrote up (Using MKS toolkit for NT) to get the tapes moved from one server to the other and keeping their assigned dates etc.
If Veritas says it cannot be done it is because they want you to use their consulting services to come in and write up the scripts etc.
