I am about to upgrade my SMS Site Servers (Three primary site servers in 3 sites running on Windows NT 4.0 with SMS 2.0 (SP3) and SQL (SP2)) to Windows 2000.

However, I have been unable to find detailed Microsoft documents on how to perform the upgrade. I want to do an in-place upgrade seeing how my hardware is sufficient.

- I plan to perform a full flat backup of the server and database (meaning services and database stopped.).

- Then I need to run a Compaq primer utility to put all drivers in defualt mode during the windows 2000 upgrade process. (For example, NIC teaming may get screwed up...therefore, the primer utility disables teaming during the upgrade process.)

- Now, I'm not sure. I may leave the SMS and SQL services shut down duing the windows 2000 upgrade process. I'm not sure...what do you recommend?

- I'm also not sure if order matters...primary site, secondary site?

Am I missing any steps? In general the upgrade process should be pretty straight forward.

Thanks for any information... Joseph L. Poandl

Hello

I m very interesting about your experience for this upgrade.

I Explain
I have a SMS Primary server on Windows NT4 sp6 and SQL 6.5. This server is also a BDC from My Windows domain NT4.
The hardware of this machine is bad ,and we have more and more sms clients.

We have buyed a new hardware machine and i want to migrate SMS SITE server to this machine.
By the same occasion I would like to benefit from it to pass the server on windows 2000 and SQL 2000 and SMS SP4 or SP5

My site server is SMS 2.0 SP3

Could you help me what i will do to migrate
thanks a lot

Hi,

I didn't have any problems performing the NT 4 to Windows 2000 operating system upgrade. The most important thing to remember is to have a good backup.

The steps I list above are the steps that I used for my upgrades. I did shut down the SMS and SQL services during the upgrade. But I don't think you really have to do this...

-hope this helps..
