We have MM 3.0 with MSS on s3400 servers. We are looking at 5.1 with s8730 servers. Many of our VIP users have messages saved that they want moved to the new system.

Does anyone know how this is done? Is it as simple as backing up the old system and restoring to the new one? I have heard about a Mutare product that could do it but was not sure if it is necessary.

Dooh!...I also meant to ask if anyone has done this kind of upgrade and is it something we could do ourselves after the admin and install Avaya courses.

The upgrade is a restore to the new hardware so the messages will not be lost.

As far as doing it your self i think you would be crazy not to use your BP or someone else who has done this before.

Even if you take the admin and install course you will not have the experiences of a seasoned installer that knows the in's and out's of the MM and how to fix them when it occurs

Thanks Ken, the BP wants 10K to do it though. That seems outrageous to me.

If you only have (1) MAS you you don't necessarily have to upgrade to S8730's... You could still use the S3400's... The labor should considerably less.

When you have E1 integration and 2 or more MAS’s then you need a supplementary server to host the MWI, Call-Me, Fax Sender, Offline Storage, and Tracing services. With T1, SIP, and H.323 you only need the supplementary server if you have 3 or more MAS’s. This is new to 5.x and wasn’t the case with 4.x or prior builds.

Not sure what you are talking about you can't use S3400 hardware on the 5.x software at all. And if you have E1 or more than one MAS you don't need a supplementary server to run anything.

You say you thing 10 k is high but how many users do you have? And how many MAS's

Even thou it is a restore the time that it takes to do this can be lengthy and the followup can be days worth of work.

We have one MAS and one MSS. What is the E1 that you guys are talking about.

Oh sorry, my head was on servers. I knew E1 sounded familiar but I kept thinking some aspect of the servers. We have 1 QSIG T1. That seems like one of the easier things to deal with. At the same time I have been wondering if that can be dropped and an IP connection used.

We have 927 licenses.

don't forget SIP!

On your topic though, the install/upgrade with your scenario should be done by a certified Avaya Business Partner or Avaya direct or the system might not be supported.

Who do you have your product maintenance with?

h323 is native in my level of CM (3.1.2) but sip is not. Are there advantages to using h323 vs the T1? Seems like it would be cheaper to not get the T1 interface in the server and the number of channels would just be a configuration process to adjust the bandwith used instead of adding a t1. Does it take a dedicated clan like ecas?

If you use the fax feature, then you cannot use H323. I don't believe it uses a dedicated CLAN, but you (or whomever is installing) can look over the latest config note to verify.

Another gotcha going to the H323 is the message size of recordings would be about 4 times as large (assuming you are using GSM encoding right now) since it would require you to use G.711 encoding.
