Hello, we currently have exchange 5.5 and we are going to upgrade to 2003. When we do this, we are going to put in a new server to replace the old one. The question is, all of our clients are pointing to the old box, and for whatever reason, the people in charge want to name the new box differently and give it a different ip than the old box, and use DNS and WINS to "fool" the clients into thinking the new box is the old box. Is there a better way to do this?? Will this even work? Any documentation links either way would be very helpful, TIA.

The only way I could even *think* of doing this is:

1. Do an inplace upgrade to 2003.
2. Back up the stores.
3. Re-do the box and give it the new name.
4. Install Exchange in disaster recovery mode.
5. Install SP1 for Exchange
6. Recover the stores.

Maybe? Anyone? I've never done this exact thing. Of course, do a complete backup before step 3. And change DNS to reflect the new name.
