My Department heads basically put it like this. "Talk us into an upgrade" So..Here are the facts. We are a Hospital running
a Nortel Option 81. VERSION 3621
RELEASE 4
ISSUE 50 W +
IDLE_SET_DISPLAY NORTEL

We have roughly 20 to 30 bad ports mostly digital. The switch needs multiple software patches to even begin looking at an upgrade and is showing those tell tale signs. Gentlemen give me some Amunition to get this thing upgraded.

Release 4.5w was a very stable software that Nortel had issued. If you have 30 odd bad ports, then replacing the Digital cards isn't going to be expensive. (I'm ceasing a Opt 61c on Monday with loads of them to scrap). Anyway, Patching is simple to apply.

If the system is working fine and you aren't planning on spending money, just to get IP phones, then why upgrade it?.

You have two CPU's and these systems are hard to kill. The newer CPPM's are good, but can also mean more work with very little gain in your case.

considering that 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 7.0 and now 7.5 are out, how do you feel about being unsupported? Support for 6.o should go to 2015. (sale just ended). Just sayin....considering you are a hospital.

Is it running CPIV's with new cardcages? Is it converted to Fiji or running IGS? If both of those are done when you went in to 4.50w its not "to" expensive to migrate it to an 1000M 7.0/5 system. Mostly just pushing in some new software and a cupple of Cots for Securitydomain and Signaling server application.

Though is it old cpu's with old cardcage and IGS the uppgrade will cost shitloads of money and the way forward wuld be to move in to CPPM callservers, Cots Sigservers and MGEXPEC's to reuse the old IPE shelfs as Mediagateway shelfs.

Doing this in to 7.5 will add service from nortel up to 2016~ something.

I have to agree with nhphoneguy, the big selling point here is not being supported.
