We're a small non-profit that was given an Option 11 C. It has three cabinets with fiber link between them. Lots of analog and digital cards (we already have the phones).

It's ancient -- it runs Release 21.

Since we have no support contract, how easy would it be to upgrade the software release to something a little more modern? I was hoping at least release 25. I don't even know where to start.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, you would have to upgrade to the latest release, 5.5. This would entail replacing the existing processor card with the latest SSC card and S/W daughterboard. If you have Meridian Mail, it would have to go to CallPilot. All of the rest of the hardware should be fine.

A little more modern? For free, that is modern enough in my book. That system does a lot you probably don't even know about - and all for free.

For example, what in Release 25 would you want that Release 21 does not have?

Maybe post a few "blue sky" ideas and we can modernize you right in the system you have...

Thanks for the ideas. There are two main things we'd *like* that we'd need a newer software release for.

The first is the ability to use the newer 3900 series phones, which I believe require release 25, but I'm not 100% sure.

The second is the ability to use a CallPilot system. I think that requires release 22 or higher. The current system has a non-working Meridian Mail, and it didn't come with the install tapes so we can't even rebuild it. So, rather than investing in a different MM, it would be nice to jump to the CallPilot.

But, the biggest issue for us is the Voice Mail. The newer phones would be nice but not necessary. Assuming we stuck with the release we have, are there any other options for Voice Mail that would be sufficient for about 50 mailboxes? It would need to be integrated enough so that the message waiting indicators on the phones worked, but that's about it.

Thanks!

The 39xx sets came out in Rls 24. Because of licensing, you will not be able to go to Rls 24 or 25 with the system you obtained. You would have to upgrade it to the latest. You might be able to find someone that decommissioned a Rls 25 system that you could purchase the processor and keycodes from. Then you could install it into your system with the hardware you have and utilize 39xx sets.

As for voice mail, I could be wrong but a CallPilot Mini might work. They just hook up with an ACD queue and 2616 sets. It doesn't integrate with an ELAN or AML link. However, I haven't installed a Mini on anything under x21 Rls 3.

Since you are a non-profit, I would try going through some of the Nortel Shops and see what they can do for you to upgrade to 25.40. Even though it is outdated, I have seen things happen with upgrades/replacements that others said couldn't be done. It's worth a few phone calls anyway!
