Hi there

my basic network is ethernet on patch panels into ethernet switches upto speeds of 100mbs

What i have been tasked to do it start to upgrade out network to 1000mbs (gigabit speed).

What is the best process for this i am thinking of havin one gigabit port in my server room and this will connect to 3 other gigabit hubs that will be connected to all of the pcs at 100mbs with cat5

the gigabit it to carry the data from hub to hub at faster speeds.

Where can i find info??/

The four switches to be put in my building will only need to have 1x gigabit slot and 24 100mbs ports.

Thanks in advance

Some points to ponder

I do not think they even make gigabit hubs, only switches, so all you will find are switches.

If all the switches are to be in the same area, one larger switch will have fewer bottlenecks than 2 smaller switches.

If each switch only has one gig port how are you planning on connecting them? Stacking cables?

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

ah sorry i meant to say each switch uplink will be gig with maybe 24 10/100 connections and in my server room ill have a switch with 24 ports all being a gig.

as for them being in the same area i am not doing this im going to have 3 racks in different parts of the building.

So to explain better

server room: server with 1 gig ethernet card
connected to a gig switch with 24 ports

3 switches with a 1 gig uplink going back down to 100mbs for the connections still using cat 5e cable.

the cable from the server room to each 1gig switch will be cat 6

all in all i want to speed up my network between switches and the server to reduce collisions and increase speads over the network all machines will still be using 100mbs apart from mine and a few others will have gig ethernet cards in.

A question i do have is i use wiring standard 568-b what is the wiring like for cat, will the uplink being cat 6 still work with cat 5 for the clients.

If you plan to buy new switches you might consider getting them with fiber ports to connect them together.

The answer is "42"

You will eliminate colisions by elimiating hubs and duplex mismatches. Cat5e is fine for gigabit.
