Upgrade messed up database configuration

I am a newbie to SharePoint. In a new project we are working with:
SharePoint 2003 on Windows 2003, with SQL Server 2000.

We have the SharePoint Portal on port 81. The portal worked fine.

I tried setting the site to use ASP.Net 2.0 in IIS, and ran the stsadm utility command as MS recommended (
After that, the wen.config was updated as expected, but on the portal page I get an error:
Invalid configuration database status. (ExtendRequired)

Any help / pointers ?
