can I use the lan utility to back up a merlin messaging 2.5 (including mailbox contents) and then restore the programming to a new 4.0?

You can make a back-up - but I do not believe you can restore it to a Magix 4.0 Alas, they never included a mechanism for upgrading back-up files from one release to the next - like they did with the processor.

Ah - I did forget one option available to you. You could upgrade your existing R2.5 to a Magix R4.0. The upgrade process would not affect your existing configuration and would update all of your mail boxes without affecting their content. All of yopur AA menus and announcements would also remain intact. The upgrade might be worth it - just to save the hassle of all that reprogramming! Of course the upgrade would set you back a few dollars - but not nearly as much as buying a new messaging module. After the upgrade you could back-up everything to your PC and restore it to a brand new Magix Messaging R4.0

you lost me on that one.

Magix 2.2
messaging 2.5

planning to replace the voicemail because it has been showing signs of trouble for several months. Reset utilities and such are not correcting the issues.

How will upgradding the Magix affect the abillity to backup/restore the Messaging between releases?

I am talking about upgrading your existing R2.5 Magix Messaging - not the processor. The problems you are having with your existing messaging indicate hard drive issues. If you upgrade your messaging module to R4 - you can then make a backup of configuration, mailboxes, announcements, schedules, etc - in messaging R4 format to your PC. If you then choose to buy a new R4 messaging module - you can restore the backup seemlessly. Of course, you could just buy a replacement hard drive and save money by restoring your backup to the new drive in your old module. The Messaging R4.0 upgrade kit can be purchased for around $300. You can buy a replacement hard drive in the $150 - $200 range. A lot cheaper than a new messaging module and you have all of the advantages of Messaging R4.0

To fully utilize Magix Messaging R4.0 features (e.g., Record-A-Call) you will also need to upgrade your Magix processor software to R4.0
