We are running Macola 7.5 103f on a NetWare server running Pervasive 2000i. What is my suggested upgrade path to Macola 7.6 300x? I hear Macola 7.6 400 is out. I am not sure we want to be quite that far out on the bleeding edge.

We can upgrade to Pervasive 9. Should I do this before or after the Macola upgrade?

Are there any registration bytes I need to worry about?

I read about a pre update process to install the COBOL compiler components. Do I need to run this on 7.5 103f?

I beleive you need to advance as follows :
7.5.103f to 7.6.100
7.6.100 to 7.6.300
7.6.300 to 7.6.300(a-b...) or 7.6.400
7.6.400 to 7.6.400(a or b)

You will also need to check compatiblity of your Pervasive Version to Progression Version, Exact is at 7.6.400b and P.SQL 9.1. You will also need to check on compatibility of your Netwear version to all of the above. I haven't seen a Novell site in quite a few years.

I personally wouldn't pay any money to update pervasive, I would rather move to Microsoft SQL. Just my opinion.

I forgot to list 7.6.200 as an option after 7.6.100, but I wouldn't touch it with 7.6.300 and 7.6.400 as options.

Actually 76400 is REQUIRED for pervasive 9. Nor is 76400 bleeding edge. 76400 spa was released a year ago. 76400b only a few weeks ago. So I would hold off on 76400b.

Depending on who you talk to, you will get different answers, but I have updated from 75103f Pervasive 7 to 76400 SQL without EVER going to a newer version of Pervasive. I can get you references on this if you like.

I have 25 companies in Macola that vary in size from 200MB to 2.2GB. How long will each update take to apply?

Hard to say. Have you purged any of your pervasive data? Obe of the characteristics of a btrieve file is that it never shrinks until you rebuild it. So if you have been purging but never rebuilding, what is 2.2GB may well be less than that.

Also remember you can start a conversion, then add as many workstations as you like to the conversion process to speed the whole thing up. The most workstations I have ever used doing this is 15.

The conversion starts with the largest file in Macola - usually IMINVTRX.btr - and converts it to SQL. As soon as this is launched, go to another workstation and launch the conversion and it will ask "do you want to join the conversion in progress?" or words to that effect. Answer yes and it picks up with the 2nd largest .btr file. Add as many workstations as you need.

You probably need to do a test conversion anyway, so I would take up a couple of your larger databases and test this over a weekend, to see how long it takes. Then just do a little math on the total # of GB of all companies to estimate a time.

To back up a bit, with 25 companies I WOULD NOT do what I mentioned before - upgrading directly to 76400 SQL from 75x pervasive.

However going to 76400a should be considered a must IMHO.

Do you have crystal reports, F9, Starship, MS Access applications or Flexibility projects involved? If so these may or more likely will need to be upgraded as well. This is a pretty big project. Are you getting your Macola reseller or regional office to help you?

Are you saying I can stay on Pervasive 2000i and update Macola 7.5 103f to Macola 7.6 400a?

Macola 7.6 400a is required for Pervasive 9 but Pervasive 9 is not required for Macola 7.6 400a?

I believe I may have misread your post. If you are staying on Pervasive, you can throw my post above completely our of the picture.

I thought you were upgrading to SQL.

JDMiller:

Are you still wondering what to do? I can help with the Netware pervasive issue and upgrade path if you still want to proceed down that road and stay on your current pervasive server. If so, post back. I've been off this forum for at least 6 months, so I'm trying to catch up. We can discuss in further detail if you need to move ahead.
