Presumably you have installed Notes itself on a separate server, and are simply upgrading the client?
I must stress that I haven't tried upgrading the version (4.x - 5.x), but upgrading 4.5 to 4.6 was as simple as putting the server into change user /install mode and running the installer from the CD.
