Hi, does anybody know how to upgrade the IOS on a Cisco 2600 via the console cable?
If I use a tftp server to upgrade it will it overwrite the existing IOS?
Any help is apreciated cos I'm virgin with Cisco Routers.

Using the console you need to do an xmodem file transfer. This is easily done through hyperterminal but is painfully slow. go to
the xmodem procedure is explained there. You'll need to get the router into rommon mode this can be achieved by using hyperterm and reloading the router then issue a break sequence within the first 30 seconds of the bootup process. after that follow the link above. I believe this will overwrite the existing ios as well (memory depending) so if that is the case might as well tftp and be done in a minute as opposed to like two hours. Maybe another forum expert could shed some light on this. Hope i've been helpful. let me know how things work out for you.

Thanks Writemem I'll take a look a that right now.
