I have recently purchased a elitegroup 755-A2 V1.0 Motherboard, AMD 64bit 3000+ CPU, Geforce 256mb Graphics card, 512md ddr, power suppy & sexy new case. I have used these components along with parts from my old system including 2 hdd's and 2 dvd's (one D/L R/W).

All went well until booting up!
The good old blue screen of death greets me during windows startup and states that windows has been stopped to protect my system (or words to this effect). It suggests that I remove any new hdd's or hdd controllers.

Is this just because the hdd was installed and used under the old motherboard or is it something more sinister?

You mean you've booted the hard drive as it was set up on the old mobo? If so, then that's your problem - drivers. A repair reinstall will usually sort this:-

(need to reapply latest service pack & visit windows updates after - but apps, data & settings intact)

If that doesn't work, you'll need to backup and do a clean install.
